Why in news
Nepal began exporting electricity to Bangladesh for the first time on November 15, 2024, using India’s electricity grid.
The power flow is seen as a step toward enhancing sub-regional energy cooperation between India, Nepal, and Bangladesh.
The export comes amid an ongoing electricity shortage in Bangladesh, worsened by the suspension of power from Adani’s Godda plant.
Tripartite Power Sales Agreement
The agreement was signed between:
NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (NVVN) (India),
Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) (Nepal),
Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) (Bangladesh).
Signed on October 3, 2024, in Kathmandu, the agreement facilitates the export of up to 40 MW of Nepalese electricity to Bangladesh through India’s power grid.
This agreement aims to strengthen energy ties and provide a solution to Bangladesh’s power shortages, using Nepal's hydroelectric potential.
