Why in news
Government data reveals that only 3.4% of students in Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) belong to Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs)
The government introduced a 5% sub-quota for PVTGs in admissions to EMRS to improve tribal education access.
There has been a consistent rise in dropout rates among PVTG students over the past three years, with 18 students dropping out in the 2023 academic year.
Key reasons for the low enrollment and increasing dropouts include infrastructure gaps, teacher shortages, financial pressures on students, and the quality of education.
The 5% quota was introduced after the centralization of the administration of these schools in 2019 under the National Education Society for Tribal Students (NESTS)
