A rare sighting of the Oriental dollarbird at Chembarambakkam lake caught the attention of the birding community, marking a long-awaited return to Chennai after its last recorded sighting in 2016.
Oriental dollarbird
The Oriental dollarbird is a bird of the roller family, so named because of the distinctive pale blue or white, coin-shaped spots on its wings.
It can be found from Australia to Korea, Japan and India.
Known for its long migration, it’s a passage migrant that moves between breeding and wintering areas.
IUCN Conservation status : Least Concern
Chembarambakkam lake
Chembarambakkam lake is a lake located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu
It is one of the two rain-fed reservoirs that supply water to Chennai City, the other one being the Puzhal Lake.
This was the first Artificial lake built by Rajendra Chola I the son of Rajaraja Chola
Chembarambakkam lake was known as Puliyur Kottam.
It is one of the 24 kottams (villages) that existed even during the later Chola period in Thondai Mandalam
