Why in news
India’s antitrust body, the Competition Commission of India (CCI), found that food delivery giants Zomato and Swiggy violated competition laws.
Zomato and Swiggy made exclusive deals with certain restaurants, offering benefits like lower commissions or business growth in exchange for being listed exclusively on their platforms.
The exclusivity arrangements were found to limit competition, preventing the market from becoming more competitive.
The investigation started in 2022 after the National Restaurant Association of India raised concerns about the negative impact of these practices on food outlets.
