The Supreme Court of India rejected 93 petitions from various missionary organizations seeking an exemption for salaried nuns from paying income tax.
The petitioners argued that nuns take a vow of poverty and live ascetic lives, so their salary should not be taxed.
They claimed that the income earned by nuns is not for personal use but goes to their religious congregation.
The SC disagreed with this argument and stated that any person who receives a salary, including nuns, is subject to income tax under the law, regardless of their vow of poverty or whether the salary is paid to them or their congregation.
