It will be the first export of defence technology from Japan under the 2015 agreement.
The 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue in August 2024 had discussed the early transfer of UNICORN technology.
The MoI was signed between the Indian Envoy to Japan and the Japanese MoD's Acquisition Technology and Logistics Agency.
Key Features of the UNICORN Mast:
The mast will house integrated communication systems.
The design of the mast will improve the stealth characteristics of naval platforms.
Implementation and Collaboration:
India and Japan will jointly develop and produce the UNICORN mast.
Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) will collaborate with Japanese entities in the co-development process.
This will be the first instance of co-development and co-production of defence equipment between India and Japan.
Japan's Defence Export Policy:
Japan has strict conditions for military hardware exports due to its pacifist constitution.
Japan's constitution is known as the "pacifist constitution" because it renounces Japan's right to wage war and maintain military forces
India and Japan previously explored the procurement of amphibious planes, but the deal did not materialize due to high costs and other priorities.
Overall, the India-Japan UNICORN mast project signifies a significant step forward in bilateral defence cooperation, marking a new era of technological exchange and joint development of advanced military equipment.
