A report by the Global Carbon Budget (GCB) collective of scientists reveals that carbon emissions are expected to rise by 0.8% in 2024 compared to 2023
The largest sources of global fossil CO2 emissions in 2023 were China (31%), the U.S. (13%), India (8%), and the EU-27 (7%), which together accounted for 59% of total emissions.
India's fossil CO2 emissions are expected to increase by 4.6% in 2024, while emissions from China are expected to rise by just 0.2%.
However, China's emissions are much higher in absolute terms (12 billion tonnes) compared to India's 3.2 billion tonnes.
The concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere is predicted to reach 422.5 parts per million (ppm) in 2024, which is 52% higher than pre-industrial levels
The study suggests that we may reach the "carbon budget" limit needed to avoid a 1.5°C global temperature rise in just six years
This means there is limited time to prevent crossing the 1.5°C threshold
