Why in news
India and Pakistan have renewed their agreement to operate the Kartarpur Corridor for another five years.
The announcement follows recent diplomatic engagements, including a visit by India’s External Affairs Minister to Pakistan.
The original agreement was signed on October 24, 2019, for a five-year period.
The renewal extends the agreement until 2029, ensuring continued access for pilgrims.
Kartarpur Corridor agreement
The corridor allows Indian pilgrims to visit the Kartarpur Sahib Gurudwara in Pakistan.
It connects the Darbar Sahib Gurdwara in the Narowal district of Pakistan with the Dera Baba Nanak shrine in the Gurdaspur district in India’s Punjab province.
It is located on the east bank of the Ravi River in India, around 1 km from the Indo-Pakistan border.
It was built to commemorate the 550th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev on 12th November 2019.
