Why in news
The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is nearing completion and will soon begin experiments on neutrinos, which are fundamental particles that could help solve key mysteries in particle physics.
Set to start collecting data in the latter half of 2025
Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO)
Location: Jiangmen, Guangdong province, China.
Structure: A giant sphere 700 meters underground, surrounded by a 12-storey cylindrical pool of water.
Cost: Approximately $300 million.
Function: To collect data on neutrinos emitted from nearby nuclear power plants, the Sun, and natural radioactive decay to understand subatomic processes and the universe's early days.
