Why in news
India's fourth nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), S4*, was launched in Visakhapatnam, marking a significant advancement in the country's naval capabilities.
The submarine includes substantial indigenous content, showcasing India's push for self-reliance in defense manufacturing.
India now has two operational SSBNs (INS Arihant and INS Arighaat), with a third (Aridhman) undergoing sea trials, enhancing its underwater nuclear deterrent.
The S4* is armed with the K-4 SLBM, which has a range of 3,500 km, allowing for nuclear launches while submerged.
The Indian Navy is developing a longer-range SLBM (5,000 km) to further bolster its undersea nuclear capabilities
