Why in News
A new scam called the "digital arrest scam" has emerged, leading to significant financial losses for individuals and businesses.
Prime Minister Modi has warned the public about this scam, encouraging them to report incidents to the cyber helpline.
What is a Digital Arrest Scam?
An online scam where fraudsters impersonate law enforcement officials to intimidate and defraud victims.
Scammers falsely accuse victims of illegal activities and demand money to avoid consequences.
How Digital Arrest Scam Works
Scammers pose as officials (e.g., CBI agents) and contact victims via phone.
They switch to video calls, threaten victims with a "digital arrest warrant," and create a police station-like environment to seem credible.
Victims are coerced into transferring money to "clear their name" or for a "refundable security deposit."
How to Avoid Becoming a Victim
Be suspicious of calls from unknown officials claiming you are in trouble.
Don't succumb to pressure tactics that create a sense of urgency.
Verify the identity of the caller by contacting the relevant agency directly.
Avoid sharing personal or financial information over calls or video chats.
Remember that government agencies do not use platforms like WhatsApp for official communication.
Report any suspicious incidents to local police or cybercrime authorities.
What to Do if You Are a Victim
Immediately report the incident to your bank and freeze your account.
File a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in).
Keep all evidence of the scam, such as call details and transaction records.
Seek legal help if necessary.
