Why in news
Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced a mobile application for the Civil Registration System (CRS) to improve the process of registering births and deaths in India.
The app allows citizens to register births and deaths anytime, anywhere, in their state's official language, making the process more accessible and convenient.
It is expected to significantly reduce the time needed for registration, streamlining a crucial administrative process.
According to the Registration of Births and Deaths (Amendment) Act, 2023, from October 1, 2023, all births and deaths must be digitally registered.
The digital birth certificate will serve as a single proof of date of birth for various official purposes, like school admissions and job applications.
This new system will help maintain a central database, which can be used for updating the National Population Register (NPR), ration cards, property registrations, and electoral rolls.
Mr. Shah also unveiled a statue of India’s first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel at the Census Building in the capital.
