Why in news
The Chhattisgarh government announced a rise in reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC) in local body elections.
The increase is based on recommendations from the State Backward Classes Welfare Commission.
The reservation limit for OBCs has been raised from 25% to a maximum of 50%.
The new reservation will apply to various local government positions, including district panchayat chairpersons and municipal corporation mayors.
If the total reservation for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) in a local body is 50% or more, the OBC reservation will not apply.
If it’s below 50%, OBCs can receive up to 50% reservation, limited by their population ratio.
