Estimated Foodgrain Production in India
Record Production: India’s foodgrain production is estimated at 3,322.98 lakh tonnes (LT) for 2023-24, an increase of 26.11 LT from last year.
Rice Production: Estimated at 1,378.25 LT, up by 20.7 LT from 1,357.55 LT the previous year.
Wheat Production: Estimated at 1,132.92 LT, an increase of 27.38 LT from 1,105.54 LT.
Millet Production: Estimated at 175.72 LT, slightly higher than 173.21 LT last year.
Pulses Production: Expected to decrease to 242.46 LT, down from 260.58 LT.
Oilseeds Production: Expected to drop to 396.69 LT from 413.55 LT.
Sugarcane Production: Set to decrease to 4,531.58 LT, down from 4,905.33 LT.
Cotton Production: Estimated at 325.22 lakh bales, down from 336.6 lakh bales.
Reasons for Changes
Higher yields of rice, wheat, and millets contributed to the overall increase in foodgrain production.
Drought-like conditions in southern states and Maharashtra led to moisture stress, particularly affecting: Pulses, Coarse cereals, Soybean, Cotton
Dry spells during August, especially in Rajasthan, impacted rabi season crops.
