A team of entomologists have discovered three new edible insect species from Arunachal Pradesh.
New edible stink bug species
Belonging to the genus Coridius of family Dinidoridae (Hemiptera), these stink bugs have been named Coridius adii, Coridius insperatus and Coridius esculentus
Coridius adii is named in honour of the Adi tribe, inhabiting mainly the Siang valley in Arunachal Pradesh, which consumes this species as food
Coridius insperatus is distinct from all other species in the group.
It has four segmented antennae and a copper-coloured back, while other similar bugs have five segmented antennae and are dark brown, yellow, or black on top
Coridius esculentus was discovered during a socio-economic survey, consuming it in large quantities causes intoxication
Stink bug
Stink Bug, (family Pentatomidae), any of about 5,000 species of insects in the true bug order, Heteroptera, that are named for the foul-smelling secretions they produce
Stink Bugs generally range between 5 and 12 mm (0.2 and 0.5 inch) in length.
Sexual dimorphism, a condition in which the appearance of the male and female differs, exists in some species.
Their combination of colour and shape camouflages many of these insects as they sit on bark and foliage
