Four Kirti Chakras, three of them posthumous, and 18 Shaurya Chakras, four posthumous, are among the 103 gallantry awards

Gallantry Awards have been instituted by the Government of India to honour the acts of bravery and sacrifice of the officers/personnel of the Armed Forces, other lawfully constituted Forces and civilians.
First Three Awards:
Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra, Vir Chakra
Instituted: January 26, 1950
Effective From: August 15, 1947
After that other 3 gallantry awards instituted
