Why in news
In his 11th successive Independence Day address, Prime Minister Modi gave a renewed push to aim of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC)
Reframing the idea as a “secular civil code” enshrined in the Constitution and a way of ensuring equality before the law for all.
Secular civil code
In Secular civil code, the rules are based on secular (non-religious) principles.
It covers areas like marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption.
It applies to all citizens equally, regardless of their religion.
Laws are created and enforced by the state, not by religious authorities.
It ensures that personal laws are separate from religious teachings.
Uniform Civil Code (UCC): A proposal to unify diverse religious-based personal laws into a single, uniform set of laws for all citizens.
Secular Civil Code: A legal system where personal laws are inherently secular, meaning they are based on non-religious principles and apply uniformly to all citizens without religious influence.
