Why in news
The Supreme Court stayed a July 1 notification issued by the AYUSH Ministry in which Rule 170 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945 was “omitted”
The court’s decision was influenced by a May 7 order related to a contempt case against Patanjali Ayurved Limited, indicating that the July 1 notification conflicted with the earlier Supreme Court ruling.
Rule 170 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Rules, 1945
It prohibits misleading advertisements and exaggerated claims for Ayurvedic, Siddha, and Unani drugs.
It provides guidelines for taking action against misleading or objectionable advertisements related to Ayurvedic, Siddha, and Unani drugs
The rule was added in 2018 after a parliamentary committee found that the Ayush ministry often advertised these products without approval from the relevant state licensing authority.
