Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin dissolved the 12th Parliament, formed through the January 7 national election
He assured the country that fresh elections will be held as soon as possible.
This comes a day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stepped down after 15 straight years in power and fled the country, following a crackdown on widespread protests
What does dissolve mean in Parliament?
Dissolution in Parliament means the formal term to end the parliament.
Dissolution ends the tenure of the current House and a new House is formed after general elections
The Lok Sabha is the only legislative body that can be dissolved.
Only the President has the authority to dissolve the House of Representatives.
The President can issue the dissolution order even before the end of the five-year tenure if the Council of Ministers has given him permission.
He can also dissolve the Council of Ministers if there is a vote of no confidence and no party can demonstrate a majority.
Lok Sabha
As per Article 83(2) of the Constitution, the Lower House (Lok Sabha) is dissolved five years after it first began to meet.
The Lok Sabha is dissolved either automatically at the end of its five-year term or by Presidential order.
The second case happens when the President believes that no functional government can be established following a leader's resignation or the downfall of a regime.
When a house is dissolved, all the bills, motions, resolutions, notices, petitions, and other business outstanding before the Lok Sabha or its committees get expired.
The Lame Duck session is the last session before the Lok Sabha is dissolved
Rajya Sabha
The Rajya Sabha can not be dissolved since it is a permanent house.
Its members are elected every two years for a six-year term, with a third of the members available for election every six years.
