Controversial Claims
Prime Minister Modi claimed India created “eight crore new jobs” in recent years, based on India-KLEMS data, which is contested.
Critics argue the data may overestimate job creation due to outdated or questionable population projections.
The rise in workers reported conflicts with global trends and other data sources like Periodic Labour Force Surveys (PLFS), raising doubts about the accuracy.
The India-KLEMS database used different methods and sources for population estimates, potentially leading to inaccuracies.
India-KLEMS Database
The India-KLEMS project began as an academic exercise financed by the RBI in 2009
From 2022, the RBI hosts the database
KLEMS stands for Capital (K), Labour (L), Energy (E), Material (M) and Services (S)
It measures industry-level total factor productivity (TFP), not specifically designed for employment data.
Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises (ASUSE)
The ASUSE is published by the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), which is part of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
The ASUSE covers only unincorporated non-agricultural establishments in manufacturing, trade and other services.
