 Fundamental Role of Categorization:

  • Categorization, including the counting and labeling of people, places, events, and activities, forms the foundation of governance and politics.

The 2024 Paris Olympics and Categorization:

  • The Paris Olympics demonstrated the strictness and harshness of categories.

  • It also highlighted the fluidity, biases, and sometimes the impossibility of maintaining rigid categories.

Examples of Categorization Issues:

  • Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was disqualified for being 100 grams overweight for her category.

  • The objectivity of this category was unquestioned.

  • Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who won gold in her weight category, had her sex questioned, revealing the complexities of categorization.

Sex vs. Gender:

  • While weight is considered an objective fact, a person’s sex is increasingly seen as contestable.

  • The methods to identify sex—chromosomes, hormone levels, genitalia—are debated.

  • Sex, once considered a biological constant, is now viewed as increasingly alterable.

The Fluidity of Categories in Governance

  • Citizen vs. Alien: Defining who is a citizen and who is an alien has always been challenging.

  • Crime vs. Honourable Violence: Distinguishing between criminal violence and honorable violence is another complex issue.

  • Legitimate Politics: Defining what constitutes legitimate politics and the boundaries between homeland and foreign land has historically led to conflicts and wars.

Current Political Contestations:

  • Kamala Harris's Ethnicity: The fluidity of Kamala Harris’s ethnicity is debated—is she more Asian-American or African-American?

  • Subgroup Categorization in India: There is ongoing debate over whether Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes communities should be subdivided for better social justice outcomes.

Impact of Modernity:

  • Celebration of Individualism: Modernity views individualism as a higher level of social evolution, often viewing traditional communities as regressive.

  • Atomized Individuals: Modern communities and nations are built on the concept of atomized individuals who participate in politics and the market as autonomous units.

Universal Agreement on Sex Categories:

  • Male and Female Categories: Historically, the division of humans into male and female has been a rare point of agreement across faiths, ideologies, and science.

  • Richard Dawkins's Argument:

  • While categories in nature are generally fluid, sex is an exception due to the role of male and female reproductive cells in procreation.

  • Intersex individuals exist but reinforce the rule of sexual binaries.

  • The idea of sex as a choice, guided by gender perception, is challenging the traditional view of sex as a biological constant.

  • Canadian Institutes of Health Research: Sex is defined as a set of biological attributes, while gender refers to socially constructed roles, behaviors, and identities.

  • Sex vs. Gender: Sex is what one is, while gender is what one feels, leading to debates over gender-affirming sex transitions.

  • Questions arise over whether gender-affirming sex transitions should be allowed, the appropriate age of consent, and whether public institutions should facilitate these transitions.

  • Traditionally, the mind was considered inviolable, and surgeries were meant to restore normative body functions, not alter them.

  • Gender-affirming sex transitions challenge this relationship by suggesting that the body should change to match the mind's fluidity.

The Paradox of Liberalism and Individualism

  • Liberalism must tolerate illiberal practices, which can undermine its own principles.

  • Individualism and conflicting group claims have led to social fragmentation, with sex transitions causing fragmentation within the individual self.

  • Proponents and opponents of gender-affirming care use data and science to support their arguments.

  • Technology allows for the enforcement of categories but also enables individuals to defy them.

  • As technology shifts from restorative to transformative interventions, the body is losing its normative form, and sex may follow gender as a matter of personal choice.

  • Western societies are experiencing cognitive dissonance, with some trying to hold onto traditional truths while others dismantle the notion of the inviolable individual.
