An overall increase in farm area sown by 10.3% over last year, may help cool rising prices of food items in the coming months, despite the southwest monsoon’s progress so far falling a tad short of the long period average and last year’s rain levels by July 15.
The sown area of rice, pulses and oilseeds nationwide had increased by more than 20% by Monday, while bajra, jowar and coarse cereals were still lagging last year’s levels
With major sowing occurring in July and August, the progress of monsoon would play a determinant role in managing food inflation and any shortfall could impact prices adversely
