Amid speculation over wheat shortage, the Centre invoked the Essential Commodities Act to impose stock limit on the food grain, prescribing the maximum quantity that users can hold at any point in time.
The Stock Limit Order, effective 24 June,2024, will be valid till March 31, 2025.
Asking stakeholders to conform to the stock limits within 30 days, the Food Ministry, said each trader or wholesaler can hold a maximum of 3,000 tonnes at any point while limiting retailers (including big chains) to 10 tonnes
The Centre said this is to curb hoarding and not due to shortage.
