Why in news
Amid the longest spell of heatwaves in the past 15 years, the power demand in North India surged to 89 GW (89,000 MW) on Monday, the highest ever for a single day.
To meet this demand, nearly 25% to 30% of power had to be “imported” from outside the region, the Power Ministry said
Power Grid and divisions
The electric grid of India, also known as the National Grid, is a high-voltage electricity transmission network that connects power stations and major substations across the country.
It ensures that electricity generated anywhere in India can be used to satisfy demand elsewhere.
The National Grid is owned and maintained by the state-owned Power Grid Corporation of India and operated by the state-owned Power System Operation Corporation.
It is one of the largest operational synchronous grids in the world
India’s power grid is divided into five regions: north, south, west, east, and northeast.
As of data available on March 31, the northern region accounts for 113 GW or about 25% of India’s total installed power capacity of 442 GW.
