Delhi Development Authority (DDA) is persisting with its plans of constructing permanent structures on the banks of the Yamuna, despite last year’s worst floods in Delhi’s history
The project, dubbed as “restoration” of the river’s floodplain, violates the guidelines issued in 2015 by a Principal Committee appointed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT), which the States were ordered to “strictly” follow.
The Yamuna River is the largest tributary of the Ganga River in Northern India.
It forms an integral part of the Yamuna-Ganga Plain, one of the world's most extensive alluvial plains.
It has its source in the Yamunotri Glacier at an elevation of 6,387 meters on the southwestern sides of Banderpooch crests in the lower Himalayan ranges.
It meets the Ganges at the Sangam (where Kumbh mela is held) in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh after flowing through Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi.
Important Tributaries:
Left: Hindon, Tons, Hanuman Ganga, Sasur Khaderi
The Tons is the largest tributary of the Yamuna River
Right: Giri, Baghain, Sabi, Chambal, Betwa, Sindh, Ken
The cities of Bhagpat, Delhi, Noida, Mathura, Agra, Firozabad, Etawah, Hamirpur, and Allahabad lie on its banks.
