 Tiwa Tribe

  • The Tiwa people, are a Tibeto-Burmese ethnic group primarily inhabiting the Northeast Indian states of Assam, Meghalaya (predominantly), Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Nagaland, and some parts of neighbouring Bangladesh and Myanmar.

  • Tiwa means people who were lifted from below.

  • They are recognized as a Scheduled tribe within the State of Assam.

  • Wanchuwa festival is celebrated by Tiwa tribe to mark their good harvest.

  • Tiwa (Lalung) is a Tibeto-Burman (Sino-Tibetan) language spoken by the Tiwa people

  • A striking peculiarity of the Tiwa is their division into two sub-groups, Hill Tiwa and Plains Tiwas, displaying contrasting cultural features.

  • The hill Tiwa villagers are habitual to the Jhum cultivation, horticulture, vegetables and the crops which are cultivable in the area.

  • The founder of Tiwa community is Pha Poroi “Indrosing Dewri” who has contributed a lot to the construction of Tiwa society

Karbi Anglong region

  • Karbi Anglong district is an administrative unit in the Indian state of Assam

  • It is an autonomous district administered by the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) according to the provisions of the Sixth Schedule of the constitution of India

  • "Karbi Anglong" is derived from the Karbi language. 

  • Karbi is the name of the indigenous tribe living in and around the region.
