Mustard seed production is likely to touch an all-time high of 12 million tonnes in the 2023-24 season in view of a record sown area of 10 million hectares, according to the Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA).
The association has released the details on the “mustard model farm” project, which was launched collectively by SEA and Solidaridad in 2020-21
According to SEA statement, there has been 35 per cent increase in the yield from model farms in the last five years.

India they are grown in season from September-October to February-March
It is grown mainly in the northern plains of India with some cultivated area in the eastern geography as well
Soil condition: Sandy loam to clay loam soils but thrive best on light loam soils.
Do not tolerate water logging conditions or heavy soils
Soil having neutral pH is ideal for their proper growth and development.
Bulk of the mustard production comes from Rajasthan (44.97 %), Haryana (12.44 %), Madhya Pradesh (11.32%) Uttar Pradesh (10.60 %), and West Bengal (7.53 %) during (2014-15 to 2018-19)
Solvent Extractors’ Association of India (SEA)
The SEA was formed in 1963 to help and foster the development and growth of Solvent Extraction Industry in India
At present the Association is having 875 members including about 350 working solvent extraction plants having combined oilcake/ oilseed processing annual capacity of about 30 million tonnes.
The Association is an all India body to solvent extractions industry and premier vegetable oil Association in the country having wide representative membership consisting of processors of Rice bran, Oilcakes, Minor Oilseeds and Soybean.
It is financially autonomous and functions entirely as private sector body
It is recognised as a Non Government Organisation (NGO) by the Ministry of Agriculture, Government. of India
It is also a Trade Promotion Organisation (TPO) recognised by the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India
