Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is a proposed protected area located in the Erode District of Tamil Nadu, India.
It was notified by the Government of Tamil Nadu in March 2023 and will become the 18th wildlife sanctuary in Tamil Nadu.
It will cover a forest area of 805.67 km2 (311.07 sq mi) and will cover parts of Gobichettipalayam and Anthiyur taluks in Erode district in Western Tamil Nadu.
The sanctuary is named after E. V. Ramasamy, also known as Thanthai Periyar, a social reformer and rationalist who led the Self-Respect Movement in Tamil Nadu.
The sanctuary links Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve with Cauvery South Wildlife Sanctuary thus providing the safe movement of elephants and tigers. It is also connected to Kollegal forests in Karnataka and Nilgiris, where Eastern Ghats merge with Western Ghats.
The sanctuary is home to a variety of wildlife, including elephants, tigers, leopards, sloth bears, gaur, chital, sambar, and four-horned antelope. It is also home to a variety of birds, including peacocks, hornbills, and kingfishers.
