The new species Trichoglossum syamviswanathii, named after former KFRI director Syam Viswanath, was collected from the moist soil of the Bambusetum of the KFRI Field Research Centre at Palappilly, Thrissur.
This is the scientific name for a species of fungus recently discovered in Kerala, India.
It belongs to the genus Trichoglossum, commonly known as hairy earth tongue fungi.
Trichoglossum syamviswanathii was identified in 2020 from the Idukki district of Kerala.
It is named after the late Dr. K. Syam Viswanathan, a renowned Indian mycologist who made significant contributions to the study of fungi in India.
The fungus is characterized by its small, black, and hairy fruit bodies.
It grows on dead woody debris in tropical forests.
