The Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Bargur Hills, Erode district, will serve as a protected corridor for the movement of tiger and elephants from the Western Ghats to the Eastern Ghats
The Tamil Nadu government has declared 80,114.80 hectares of reserve forests in Bargur Hills in Erode district, as the Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary.
This stretch of protected forests, links the Nilgiris Biosphere Reserve with Cauvery South Wildlife Sanctuary, and has been notified as the 18th wildlife sanctuary in the State.
The announcement about the setting up of the sanctuary was first made in the 2023 State Budget.
Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
Thanthai Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is a wildlife sanctuary located in the Erode district of Tamil Nadu, India.
It was notified by the Government of Tamil Nadu in March 2023 and is the 18th wildlife sanctuary in the state.
The sanctuary is named after E. V. Ramasamy, also known as Thanthai Periyar, a social reformer and Dravidian politician from Tamil Nadu.
The sanctuary covers an area of 80,567 hectares (311.07 sq mi) and includes reserve forest areas in Anthiyur, Bargur, Thattakarai, and Chennampatti.
The sanctuary is home to a variety of wildlife, including elephants, tigers, leopards, gaurs, sloth bears, and spotted deer.
The sanctuary is also home to a number of bird species, including peacocks, hornbills, and kingfishers.
