Skywalker hoolock gibbon
The Skywalker hoolock gibbon, also known as the Gaoligong hoolock gibbon (Hoolock tianxing), is a fascinating primate species named after the iconic Star Wars character Luke Skywalker.
Discovered in 2017 in the Gaoligong Mountains of China and Myanmar.
Previously considered part of the eastern hoolock gibbon species, but genetic and physical differences led to its classification as a distinct species.
Physical Characteristics:
Males have black fur with distinctive white eyebrows, while females have a brownish-grey coat.
Smaller than other hoolock gibbon species, reaching about 60-70 cm in length.
Agile and acrobatic, known for their brachiation skills (swinging through trees with their arms).
Habitat and Distribution:
Found in the mountainous forests of the Gaoligong Mountains, spanning China and Myanmar.
Prefer evergreen broadleaf forests with dense vegetation.
