Longwood Shola Reserve Forest in The Nilgiris and Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary in Ariyalur get the international recognition.
With two more places declared Ramsar sites, Tamil Nadu now has the highest number of such sites in the country.
The State government had submitted proposals for the Longwood Shola Reserve Forest in The Nilgiris and the Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary in Ariyalur.
The Union Ministry of Environment and Forests and the Ramsar Sites Secretariat accepted them, and both places were designated as Ramsar sites on January 31.
Longwood Shola Reserve Forest
The Longwood Shola Reserve Forest is a 116-hectare forest patch interspersed with grasslands.
It is located near Kotagiri town, about 50 km from Coimbatore.
It is a remnant of the once extensive shola forests of the Nilgiri Hills.
The forest is home to a variety of flora and fauna, including many endemic species.
It is a popular spot for hiking, birdwatching, and nature photography.
Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary
The Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary covers an area of approximately 4.537 square kilometers (1.752 square miles).
This protected area encompasses a freshwater lake and its surrounding habitat, making it an important habitat for a variety of bird species, both resident and migratory.
The Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary is a 4.537-square-kilometre protected area located in the Ariyalur District of the state of Tamil Nadu.
The sanctuary is about 25 kilometres from Thanjavur.
This freshwater lake is fed by Pullambadi, Kattalal canal and attracts thousands of birds every year.
