The Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary in Ariyalur district has been designated as Ramsar site by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the Ramsar sites Secretariat.
Covering an area of 453.7 hectares, the sanctuary, which is a wetland, is one of the important bird and biodiversity areas of Tamil Nadu.
The site acts as a home for more than 500 species of flora and fauna.
The sanctuary lies in the Central Asian Flyway and is an important breeding and foraging ground for water bird species.
The wetland also helps in irrigation and recharge of the ground water of the area.
Karaivetti bird sanctuary
The Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary covers an area of approximately 4.537 square kilometers (1.752 square miles).
This protected area encompasses a freshwater lake and its surrounding habitat, making it an important habitat for a variety of bird species, both resident and migratory.
The Karaivetti Bird Sanctuary is a 4.537-square-kilometre protected area located in the Ariyalur District of the state of Tamil Nadu.
The sanctuary is about 25 kilometres from Thanjavur.
This freshwater lake is fed by Pullambadi, Kattalal canal and attracts thousands of birds every year.
