In the lexicon on warfare, “grey-zone” is the latest entry, because of what has happened in the South China Sea and what has happened along our northern borders, Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Anil Chauhan said on Friday in a reference to China.
Gen. Chauhan said grey-zone warfare is a kind of a military action below a particular threshold that would invite a response.
What is Grey-zone warfare
Grey-zone warfare, also known as grey zone conflict or grey zone competition, refers to activities that fall between traditional peace and war.
Key Characteristics:
Operates in the "grey zone": Exists in the space between peace and open warfare, making it difficult to categorize and respond to.
Employs non-military and quasi-military tools: Often relies on economic coercion, cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns, proxy forces, and limited military actions below the threshold of full-blown conflict.
Aims to achieve strategic objectives: These objectives can include gaining political influence, weakening an adversary, or changing the status quo without triggering a full-scale war.
Deliberately avoids triggering a full-blown military response: This allows the aggressor to maintain plausible deniability and avoid international condemnation.
