Balrampur Chini Mills Limited (BCML), a leading integrated sugar mill company on February 19 announced a ₹2,000 crore forward integration project which will be the first-ever "industrial bioplastic" plant in India.
The Kolkata-based company said this diversification with its upcoming PLA (Polylactic Acid) manufacturing venture is well-aligned with the sustainability goals envisioned in India, to combat climate change.
Bioplastic
Bioplastics are a diverse group of materials made from renewable biomass sources.
Such as vegetable fats and oils, corn starch, straw, woodchips, sawdust, recycled food waste, and even microorganisms.
They offer a more sustainable alternative to traditional plastics derived from fossil fuels.
Here are some key characteristics of bioplastics:
Bio-based: Made from renewable resources, reducing reliance on finite fossil fuels.
Biodegradable: Some bioplastics can break down naturally by microorganisms into water, CO2, and biomass under specific conditions.
Compostable: Some bioplastics can be composted in industrial or home composting facilities, returning nutrients to the soil.
Variety of properties: Different bioplastics have different properties, making them suitable for various applications.
