NASA's rover Perseverance has gathered data confirming the existence of ancient lake sediments deposited by water that once filled a giant basin on Mars called Jerezo Crater.
What is known as red planet
Within the solar system, the planet known as the "red planet" is Mars.
Its reddish hue comes from the abundance of iron oxide, specifically iron(III) oxide, also known as rust, present in its soil and dust.
This gives Mars its distinctive color, easily visible even with the naked eye.
Jezero Crater
Jezero Crater is located on Mars.
Specifically within the Syrtis Major quadrangle, about 45.0 kilometers (28.0 miles) in diameter.
It sits on the western edge of a flat plain called Isidis Planitia.
Which lies just north of the Martian equator.
