Nepal has several proposed projects for power generation, each aiming to tap into the country's immense hydropower potential estimated at over 83 GW.
Here are two noteworthy ones:
1. Upper Karnali Hydropower Project:
Location: Mugu District, West Nepal
Capacity: 900 MW
This run-of-the-river project on the Karnali River is Nepal's largest proposed hydropower project.
It involves constructing a 180 m tall concrete dam, a 13.2 km headrace tunnel, and a powerhouse.
The project is expected to generate over 5.3 billion kWh of electricity annually, significantly boosting Nepal's power generation capacity and potentially allowing for electricity export.
Arun IV Hydropower Project:
Location: Sankhuwasabha and Bhojpur Districts, East Nepal
Capacity: 630 MW
This project utilizes the Arun River's flow and involves building a 170 m tall concrete dam.
A 12.1 km headrace tunnel, and a powerhouse.
Upon completion, it's expected to generate over 4.4 billion kWh of electricity annually.
