Researchers have found a link between increased levels ofahormone and nausea during pregnancy (including morning sickness).
The results published in the journalNatureshed light on these complex metabolic processes and offer potential avenues for treatment going forward.
The majority of pregnancies (70%) are affected by nausea and vomiting, which can progress toasevere form known as hyperemesis gravidarum (HG).
The hormone growth differentiation factor15 (GDF15) has previously been implicated in morning sickness in previous literature.
What is hyperemesis gravidarum (HG)
Hyperemesis gravidarum is a severe form of nausea and vomiting that affects some pregnant women.
It's much more extreme than the typical "morning sickness" most women experience in early pregnancy.
Severe nausea and vomiting: This is the main symptom, and it can happen frequently - more than 3 times a day.
Weight loss: Losing more than 5% of your pre-pregnancy weight is a common sign of HG.
Dehydration: This can happen due to frequent vomiting and lack of fluid intake. Symptoms include thirst, fatigue, dizziness, and decreased urination.
Symptoms: Headaches, confusion, fainting, jaundice, and extreme fatigue can also occur.
The exact cause of HG is unknown, but it's believed to be related to several factors, including:
Hormonal changes: High levels of the pregnancy hormone hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) might play a role.
