Param Vir Chakra (PVC): Highest wartime gallantry award, awarded for most exceptional bravery in the face of the enemy.
Ashoka Chakra (AC): Highest peacetime gallantry award, awarded for most exceptional bravery in non-warlike situations.
Maha Vir Chakra (MVC): Second highest wartime gallantry award, awarded for acts of exceptional gallantry.
Kirti Chakra (KC): Second highest peacetime gallantry award, awarded for acts of conspicuous gallantry.
Vir Chakra (VC): Awarded for acts of gallantry in wartime.
Shaurya Chakra (SC): Awarded for acts of gallantry in peacetime.
