  • In 2022, 66% of malaria cases in Southeast Asia were from India.

  • WHO report says almost 46% of all cases in the region.

  • Malaria caused by  Plasmodium vivax, which is a protozoal parasite.

  • WHO says the cases declined 76% to 5 million in 2023, and globally, there were 249 million cases in 2022.

  • Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease that affects humans and other animals

  • It is caused by a parasite called Plasmodium.

  • Which is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected Anopheles mosquitoes.

  • The malaria parasite travels to the liver, where it matures and multiplies

  • After a few weeks, the parasites enter the bloodstream and infect red blood cells

  • Malaria is preventable and treatable. 

Ways to prevent malaria,

  • Using mosquito nets

  • Wearing long sleeves and pants

  • Using insect repellent

  • Taking antimalarial medication

  • Malaria is also treatable with a number of different medications. 

  • Treatment should be started as soon as possible to prevent complications and death.

  • Malaria is a serious disease, but it is preventable and treatable. 

  • By taking steps to prevent malaria and seeking treatment early if you develop symptoms, you can protect yourself from this deadly disease.

Plasmodium vivax

  • Plasmodium vivax is a protozoan parasite and a human pathogen

  • It is the most common cause of malaria outside of sub-Saharan Africa. 

  • P. vivax is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes.

  • The life cycle of P. vivax begins when an infected mosquito bites a human and injects sporozoites into the bloodstream. 

  • The sporozoites travel to the liver, where they infect liver cells. 

  • In the liver, the sporozoites mature into schizonts, which reproduce asexually to produce thousands of merozoites.
