As the Indian Navy looks to mark Navy Day on December 4, it is also gearing up to host its largest multilateral exercise early next year.
The next edition of “Exercise Milan” is scheduled for February 2024, and is expected to see the participation of over 50 countries,
This reflects the significant expansion of the Navy’s engagements as well as capacity to assist countries in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) as the first responder and Preferred Security Partner.
Exercise Milan is a biennial multilateral naval exercise hosted by the Indian Navy.
The first exercise was held in 1995, and it has since grown to become one of the largest naval exercises in the Indian Ocean.
The exercise is designed to enhance maritime cooperation and foster interoperability among participating navies.
The exercise typically includes,
Harbor phase: This phase involves port visits and social events, professional seminars and discussions.
Sea phase: This phase involves a series of at-sea exercises, such as anti-submarine warfare, maritime interdiction, and search and rescue.
The exercise is open to all littoral states in the Indian Ocean, as well as other countries that are interested in participating.
Purpose of Exercise Milan
Enhance maritime cooperation and foster interoperability among participating navies.
Build confidence and understanding between countries in the Indian Ocean region.
Promote maritime security and stability in the region.
