What is Taxol?
Taxol, also known by its generic name paclitaxel, is a chemotherapy drug.
Taxol used to treat a variety of cancers, including breast cancer, ovarian cancer, lung cancer, and Kaposi's sarcoma.
It is a natural compound that is extracted from the bark of the Pacific yew tree.
Taxol works by stopping cancer cells from dividing.
When the microtubules are disrupted, the cancer cells cannot divide and eventually die.
Permeability glycoprotein
Permeability glycoprotein (P-gp) is a membrane protein that pumps drugs out of cells.
It is also known as multidrug resistance protein 1 (MDR1) or ABCB1.
P-gp is found in many different types of cells, including cancer cells, blood-brain barrier cells, and intestinal cells.
P-gp can make it difficult for chemotherapy drugs to reach cancer cells.
This is because P-gp pumps the drugs out of the cancer cells before they can have a chance to work.
Permeability glycoprotein
P-gp can also make it difficult for other types of drugs, such as HIV drugs, to reach their target tissues.
There are a number of different ways to overcome P-gp resistance.
One way is to use drugs that block P-gp.
These drugs are called P-gp inhibitors.
P-gp resistance is to use drugs that are designed to be resistant to P-gp.
These drugs are called P-gp substrates.
