The recent GLOF in Sikkim wreaked havoc along the Teesta river, bringing into focus the magnifying risk of climate change-induced GLOF across the Indian Himalayan Region.
A study published in Nature this year indicates that 90 million people across 30 countries live in 1,089 basins containing glacial lakes.
Of these, one-sixth live within 50 km of a glacial lake and 1 km of potential GLOF runout channels.
National Disaster Management Authority
NDMA is the apex body for disaster management in India.
It was estd under the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
NDMA is chaired by the Prime Minister of India.
The NDMA is responsible for laying down the policies, plans, and guidelines for disaster management in the country.
It also coordinates the enforcement and implementation of disaster management.
The main functions and responsibilities of the NDMA
Lay down policies, plans, and guidelines for disaster management.
Coordinate the enforcement and implementation of disaster management policies and plans.
Monitor and evaluate the implementation of disaster management plans.
Ensure the preparedness of local authorities to deal with disasters.
Provide financial and technical assistance to state governments for disaster management.
Promote research and development in disaster management.
Coordinate international cooperation in disaster management.
NDMA developed a comprehensive National Disaster Management Plan, which provides a framework for disaster prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, and rehabilitation.
The NDMA has also issued guidelines on various aspects of disaster management, such as early warning systems, disaster shelters, and disaster relief.
National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), which provides training and capacity building in disaster management.
