PM Modi launches the passenger ferry service between Nagapattinam, TN and Kankesanthurai, Srilanka.
This is marking the resumption of the service after a gap of nearly four decades.
This connectivity enhance economic and diplomatic ties.

The ferry service was suspended in the 1980s due to the civil war in Sri Lanka. Even after the war ended in 2009, there were some concerns about the security of the ferry route.
It will provide a more affordable and convenient travel option for people and goods.
HSC Cheriyapani
Its a high-speed craft that operates the ferry service between Nagapattinam and Kankesanthurai in Sri Lanka's Jaffna.
The ferry can accommodate up to 150 passengers.
The journey takes around 3-4 hours.
The ferry is named after the Cheriyapani River, which flows through Nagapattinam district.
The river is a sacred river for Hindus and is believed to be the home of the goddess Saraswati.

The ferry service was launched on October 14, 2023.
The resumption of the service is a welcome development for both countries, as it will provide a more affordable and convenient travel option for people and goods.
India – Srilanka Relation
India and Sri Lanka have a long and complex relationship that dates back over 2,500 years. The two countries share close cultural, religious, and linguistic ties.
India is also Sri Lanka's closest neighbor, separated by the Palk Strait.
India has been a major donor of economic assistance to Sri Lanka.
There have also been some tensions between the two countries, particularly over issues such as the treatment of Tamils in Sri Lanka and the Chinese presence in the IOR.
The two countries are also important partners in regional organizations such as the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).
