Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2023
GHI is a peer-reviewed annual report.
Jointly published by Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe.
GHI comprehensively measure and track hunger at global, regional, and national levels.
It is calculated using four indicators:
Undernourishment - The proportion of the population that is unable to consume enough dietary energy for active and healthy living.
Child wasting - The proportion of children under the age of five who are too thin for their height.
Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2023
Child stunting - The proportion of children under the age of five who are too short for their age.
Child mortality - The mortality rate of children under the age of five per 1,000 live births.
The GHI score for each country is calculated on a scale of 0 to 100.
Higher scores indicating more severe hunger.
Countries are then classified into one of five categories:
Low: GHI score of less than 5
Moderate: GHI score of 5 to 9.9
Serious: GHI score of 10 to 19.9
Alarming: GHI score of 20 to 34.9
Extremely alarming: GHI score of 35 or higher
India’s rank in 2023
India ranks 111 out of 125 countries in hunger index 2023.
India’s ranking is based on a GHI score of 28.7 on a 100-point scale.
This categorizes India’s severity of hunger as “serious”.
111 India reported the highest child wasting rate at 18.7%.
The country ranked 107th out of 121 countries in 2022.
