According to a 2023 study, the crude incidence rate of cancer in Mizoram is 145.3 cases per 100,000 population.
This is followed by Kerala, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh, with crude incidence rates of 139.2, 137.1, and 135.8 cases per 100,000 population, respectively.
The study also found that the most common cancers in Mizoram are lung cancer, breast cancer, and stomach cancer.
These cancers are also among the most common cancers in India as a whole.
Tobacco use is a major risk factor for cancer, and it is estimated that over 60% of men and 40% of women in Mizoram use tobacco in some form.
The traditional diet of Mizoram is high in processed meats and smoked foods, which are also risk factors for cancer.
Some people in Mizoram work in occupations that expose them to carcinogens, such as asbestos and arsenic.
Some people may have genetic factors that make them more susceptible to cancer.
