IBSA means - India , Brazil and South Africa.
Its trilateral, developmental initiative o promote south – south cooperation and exchange.
The Idea of South - South cooperation has history of decades of efforts by countries and grouping like Bandung conference 1955, Non-Aligned Movement 1961, G77 grouping, UNCTAD, the Buenos Aires Plan of Action 1978, and the 2009 Nairobi declaration.
The official name is IBSA dialogue forum, the foreign ministers of 3 countries met in brazil on 2003 and issued Brazilia Declaration.
IBSA does not have a headquarters or a permanent executive secretariat.
Objectives of IBSA.
To alleviate poverty and hunger in nations of the South;
To develop best practices in the fight against poverty and hunger by facilitating the execution of replicable and scalable projects in interested countries of the global south;
To pioneer and lead by example the South-South cooperation agenda;
To build new partnerships for development.
India’s various efforts to strengthen Global South
South - South cooperation is a technology cooperation, tries to interact and exchange knowledge, skills, and successful initiatives in a variety of fields.
It is a mechanism used by countries and international organizations to foster collaboration among developing countries in the Global South.
As developing countries gained independence in 1950 and 1960s, they sought to promote their common interests.
They wished to establish new international economic relations.
The 1955 Bandung Conference in Indonesia is considered a milestone for South - South cooperation.
India succeeded in incorporating the mechanism of South South cooperation in the 2011 Istanbul Program of Action for LDCs.
India took the initiative for South South cooperation as the North-South Dialogue could not succeed.
India played a leading role in Non-Aligned Movement conferences. It aimed to promote cooperation among developing countries.
The triangular collaboration comprises a developed nation that supports South South efforts.
A country is classified as North or South based on economic characteristics and the quality of life of its people, not on its geographical position.
Developing countries have many commonalities due to their shared colonial past.
This includes poor infrastructure, illiteracy, poverty, etc. This brings them together to cooperate and find solutions.
