Institution Deemed to be University
The UGC Act 1956 provides for Central Government to declare any institution other than a University to a status of Institution Deemed to be University as if it were a university within the meaning of Section 2(f).
Upon declaration, such institution shall be deemed to be a university.
They can decide their own syllabus.
They can grant diploma or degree to students
Full autonomy or independence in deciding courses, syllabus, admissions and fees.
Autonomy granted by Department of Higher Education (DHE), MHRD, on the advice of UGC.
Examples : Birla Institute of Technology & Science - Rajasthan, Forest Research Institute - Dehradun, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, Pusa - New Delhi, Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology - Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala Kalamandalam, Tata Institute of Social Sciences - Mumbai, Vellore Institute of Technology - Tamil Nadu etc.
