Satpura Tiger Reserve

  • Satpura Tiger Reserve (STR) also known as Satpura National Park is located in the Narmadapuram District of Madhya Pradesh.

  • Its name is derived from the Satpura range. 

  • Satpura National Park, along with the adjoining Bori and Pachmarhi wildlife sanctuaries, provides 2,200 km2 (850 sq mi) of unique central Indian highland ecosystem. 

  • It was set up in 1981.

  • It has Dhoopgarh peak as high as 1,350 metres and the almost level plains of Churna.

Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserves

  • Bandhavgarh National Park located in the Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh.

  • It was declared a national park in 1968 and then became Tiger Reserve in 1993. 

  • The park has a large breeding population of leopards, and various species of deer. 

  • Maharaja Martand Singh of Rewa captured the first white tiger in this region in 1951. 

  • Rising mining activities around the park are putting the tigers at risk. 

  • Bandhavgarh has one of the highest density of tigers known in the world and is home to some well-known tigers which are large.

Sanjay-Dubri Tiger Reserve

  • Sanjay-Dubri National Park and Tiger Reserve in Madhya Pradesh.

  • It was established in 1975.

  • Comprising an Evergreen Sal forest.

  • The Tiger Reserve comprises Sanjay National Park and the Dubri Wildlife Sanctuary.

  • All of Sanjay-Dubri Tiger Reserve used to be in Madhya Pradesh, before Chhattisgarh was carved out of it in 2000. 

  • A large part of this area is now located in Chhattisgarh, which was renamed to "Guru Ghasidas National Park" by the Government of Chhattisgarh.

Pench Tiger Reserve

  • Pench Tiger Reserve or Pench National Park is one of the premier tiger reserves of India and the first one to straddle across two states - Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. 

  • The reference to Pench is mostly to the tiger reserve in Madhya Pradesh.

  • The portion of the reserve that is in Madhya Pradesh is nestled in the southern slopes of the Satpura range of Central India.

  • It is the same forest area portrayed in the famous "The Jungle Book" by Rudyard Kipling.

  • It derives its name from its life line - the River Pench.

Kanha Tiger Reserve

  • Kanha Tiger Reserve, also known as Kanha–Kisli National Park, is one of the tiger reserves of India and the largest national park of the state of Madhya Pradesh. 

  • Kanha National Park was created on 1 June 1955 and was designated a tiger reserve in 1973.

  • Together with a surrounding buffer zone and the neighbouring Phen Sanctuary, it forms the Kanha Tiger Reserve, which is one of the biggest in the country. This makes it the largest national park in central India.

  • It is also the first tiger reserve in India to officially introduce a mascot, Bhoorsingh the Barasingha.

Panna Tiger Reserve

  • Panna National Park is located in Madhya Pradesh. 

  • Panna National Park was declared as one of the Tiger reserves of India in 1994/95 and placed under the protection of Project Tiger.

  • The reserve is located on either sides of Ken river which flows from south to north through the Lower Vindhyan Formations within the park.
