Shanan Hydropower Project
Power - 110 MW
It is situated at Jogindernagar in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh.
The project utilizes the hydroelectric potential between Uhl river at Barot and Jogindernagar that are separated by a distance of 7.3 km across a mountain range.
British Engineer Colonel B.C. Batty and his team in collaboration with the then ruler of Joginder Nagar region, Raja Karan Sen, designed and created it.
Issues regarding ownership
The project was constructed following the execution of the lease agreement in 1925.
The Shanan Power house is currently under the control of Punjab State Electricity Board and whole of the revenue goes to Punjab government.
The 99-year lease given to Punjab by the then ruler of Mandi, Raja Joginder Singh Bahadur, would end on March 2, 2024.
It is to be handed over to the Himachal Pradesh Government in 2024 after the completion of a 99-year lease.
Himachal Pradesh arguments:
Himachal Pradesh wants the project handed over to the State on expiry of the lease period.
The Himachal government had decided not to renew or extend the lease period of the project, and intends to take over the project.
Punjab arguments:
The Punjab government, on the other hand, is in no mood to part with its prized project, and is prepared to take legal recourse to retain it.
